Location: Oakland, California
Completion Date: 2008
Client: Domus Development and Self-Help for Elderly
A three-story residential complex incorporating 81 affordable senior apartments above a ground level senior community center. Built on a once-blighted motel site the project establishes a new neighborhood identity with a landmark structure at a prominent corner in Oakland's Diamond District. With parking concealed beneath the building, the design respects the street edge with a lively and varied facade and allows for a peaceful and secure interior landscaped courtyard. Many of the design features were chosen to recall neighborhood historical homes and commercial buildings to strengthen the sense of place.
